Happy and Sad Notes

I finally managed to watch the movie "Once" last night. I had been intrigued ever since my blog friend Gina posted about it a while ago, and then more so when the actor/singers won the Oscar for Best Song at this past Academy Awards.

Well, the movie and the music did not disappoint. The onscreen chemistry was obviously genuine as they are now a real life couple. I loved the message in the film; it wasn't an overly complicated film, just a simple story about a guy and a girl, their dreams, their friendship and their music. Beautiful. Here's a clip of their performance on the Awards show just before they won.

On a sad note, I was shocked to hear about the passing of the wonderful Canadian musician Jeff Healey. He succumbed to the rare form of retinal cancer that took away his eyesight at the age of 8 months. He truly was a fantastic musician, not only rock and blues guitarist, but Ian and I actually saw his jazz band play at a small club not too many years ago where he played trumpet and I believe clarinet. You had to see this to believe it.

Here is a clip of him performing, to give you glimpse of his amazing talent, especially as a guitar virtuoso.

The world has lost a another unique master. He was only 41 years old.

Thanks for the news about Jeff Healey. That is so sad. He was such an incredible musician...I remember seeing him for the first time in the movie RoadHouse (?) with Patrick Swayzee (is that right?!?!). My husband is a musician and really liked him too. What a sad day for the music world.

I was sad to hear about Jeff Healy's death too. It is amazing that he lived his whole life under the threat of that cancer and still managed to accomplish so much. What an inspiration.

I was immediately intrigued when I saw that "Once" won the best song - did you hear the female songwriter's speech? It was so moving.

I was sad to hear that Jeff Healy died. He's such a great talent. The world will miss him.

I'd like to see that movie, too! Sometimes the simpler the idea, the better. That is a shame about Jeff Healy. I just read about him in my local newspaper yesterday. He was far too young, truly sad.

I heard about Jeff Healey, and I immediately thought.. that's the guy from Road House! Sadly that is the only performance of his I ever saw.

I've meant to add "Once" to my movie queue before, but now it is officially added. Thanks for the reminder!
