Ear Spears and the other one too

Has it really been a month? I guess I have a lot of pent up posting to do.

*****

On New Year's Eve, I was in the line up to pay for heavily discounted Christmas paraphernalia at Winners when my cellphone rang.

"Hi. Guppy wanted me to call you, she has something to ask you" said Hubs on the other end.

"Okay, put her on."

"Mama, when are you going to be home?"

"In a little while sweetie. We're going to a New Year's party in about an hour so I won't be long."

"Well hurry, because I want to get my earspears."

"You want to get what?"

"My ears spears, my ears spears, Mama, my EARS SPEARS!!!!!".

'Oh, you want your ears pierced?"

"Yeah Mama, I want them now!!!"

"Oh, I don't know if that's such a good idea today. We should talk about it, and we don't have time. If you get it done and they bother you, you won't have much fun at the party. Let's talk when I get home."

"I WANT EARS SPEARS NOW!" she yelled through tears, and then I heard the phone go crashing onto the floor.

At least she wasn't in the cash line with me. Sigh.

*****

Fast forward a couple of weeks. It hadn't been forgotten.

"Mama, when will you be back from the gym? I want to get my ears pierced today." (too bad she figured out the pronunciation. One more step away from babyhood *sob*).

"Okay, I'll talk to Daddy when I get home and we'll plan it."

"Why talk to Daddy? It's a GIRL thing! We can go to the mall to the store where they sell the little girl earrings, and there's a chair there. The lady can do it right there - I saw other girls having it done. It's easy and it's not scary!"

She had a point. It is a girl thing. And Dad had no objections. So we checked out the website, looked at earring options and the video about ear care...and off we went to the mall.

My girl is an absolute warrior. Climbed up on the chair, chose her earrings, clutched the teddy bear tight and told the girl that she was ready. We mentioned that she could expect a pinch - and sure enough her whole body tensed and her face went beet red with the entry of the first post... but not a peep. For the second ear- even less reaction. "It's just a little pop, Mama, didn't hurt!"

A warrior.

*****

"Hey, you might think That I'm crazy But, you know I'm just your type I might be A little hazy But, you just cannot deny..."

"Uh, are you singing Britney Spears there, buddy?"

"Yeah. I hate to admit it, but unfortunately it's just too catchy a tune."

That was close.

This is more like it...

Earspears! Adorable! I remember how bad I wanted mine pierced too. So bad that it didn't really hurt that much at all. Did I mention I was 9? NINE. My dad has a thing about piercings. I owe my mom big for making it happen.

Girls!

Ear Spears indeed! She is a warrior princess in the making. My princess decided she needed MORE holes in her ears. She's too frugal to spend her own money and she knew I would drag my feet so she just did it herself. She did a perfect job too but I was so annoyed. Isn't motherhood funny? We work to raise independant thinkers and then get mad when they act autonomously.

Ear spears. LOL I love it!

Lots of women keep asking me why I haven't pierced Evelyn's yet, under the assumption that all babies should have it done so that they don't have to feel "the pinch" later on. These women do NOT take their children to daycare, obviously, and have other children grab their daughter's face, hair, ears, nose. It's a much safer bet to feel the pinch at, say age eight, than have them ripped out at age 8 months.

Thank you for letting me vent that here. :)

I wasn't allowed to get ear spears until I was 16. Sigh. My daughter will be 15 soon (gah!) and is asking to have a second set. I'm dragging my feet, don't know why. I guess we'll let her when she's 15. Actually, what she REALLY wants is to get her nose pierced. Ugh. I'm feeling mighty conservative right about now!

Oh, and if you want to freak out about earrings, read this post about when the back of Maya's ears grew over her earrings, encasing them in skin....GROSS!
