Should it stay or should it go?

Okay, so I've been holding out on publishing more posts about the reno because:

1/ I thought my blog was starting to get lopsided content, boring myself with the ongoing saga of the progress or lack thereof;

2/ I was waiting to get everything in place for a final reveal. But the fact of the matter is that with two kids, the start of school, adjustment to a new schedule and the reality of back to work for hubster, the kitchen remains a work-in-progress. We're about 85% there, but the final 15% may take the next few months.

So gentle, patient readers [(but I use that term loosely, because I suspect my reading community is not necessarily so gentle or old-fashioned :)]here is an update, sans backsplash or much needed- pendant over the table:

Remember this?

And this?

And this?

Now we have this:

And this:

And this:

Here's a close-up of my beloved sink where I spend countless hours wiping away the droplets, as heaven forbid any watermarks make themselves permanent. Who'd ever thought I would get this particular over a stainless steel box?

For the backsplash, I'm thinking glass tiles, the mini-subway tiles, perhaps in an aqua/blue/green colour. Hubster, on the other hand, is thinking mosaics. In either case, we need a backsplash quickly, as just yesterday I somehow managed to get sticky rib sauce not only on the top of my head and my lower back, but also the island cupboard and the frickin' ceiling, when I was trying to baste the darn ribs. Don't ask. Needless to say, I need more practice in my stellar kitchen.

For the light fixture, we're leaning toward something along these lines:

So, the question of the day: We have a beautiful harvest table that we inherited from Ian's parents. I think it was used as a schoolhouse table at one point. It's an antique piece, and used to be his table growing up. And it's quite rare, especially the fact that it's made from two solid planks. Here it is a bit closer up, check out the square nails:

We're not so sure it goes with our new kitchen. We're thinking of getting dark espresso bar stools for the island, and espresso kitchen chairs. This may or may not go with the harvest table. Alternatively we could refinish the table in a darker stain. Which would be more kid-friendly too.

Anyway, what do YOU think we should do? Should it stay or should it go?

Karen,

You kitchen looks AMAZING!!! You must love
cooking and spending time in there!

As for the table, I think you should keep it and
re-stain it! Espescially since its something you inherited from Ian's parents. Its a nice reminder of them. I'm a bit of a sap. Plus it would look great if it was refinished - espresso like you said. It would look good with leather chairs too.

Ooo Laa Laa!
I have to say that I LOVE that sink!
and I adore glass tiles, however they may not be as timeless, but who knows. They won't be going in our kitchen as we are just updating it to sell... sigh! But they are totally going in our next kitchen!

As for the table? I love the old and new mixed together, but I can see how it clashes as well. Is there anywhere in the house you can use the table because you certainly don't want to get rid of it.
In looking at the pictures more closely, I really HATE to say this, but I agree, it doesn't really go. I wonder if some new/old chairs around the table can pull it together more?

And umm... sauce on the ceiling AND your lower back? Were you doing acrobatics?

Karen, it is beautiful! I love it. I want it.
Backsplash: Subway tiles are a great look, and a bit of colour would be nice. There's also the option of a stainless steal backsplash, but that may look a little cold.

I've loved your table for a while. Can you really stain it, though? Isn't that frowned upon? I see what you mean about it perhaps not setting quite the right tone for the kitchen, since it is an antique, and the kitchen is now very modern. However, sometimes the mix-and-match works. It's hard to tell from the pix, and I'm no style guru. Wendy S. is an expert on this, isn't she?
But back to the new cabinets - they are so lovely. Cooking must be a joy now. Just keep an eye on that BBQ sauce.
Thanks for sharing [wistful sigh]

steal = steel. Darn it.

Dora- thanks! We'll have to have the group over for coffee/play soon! Even if we don't stain, we have to do something with the table, it's a bit battered!
cherry - I know, the sink was our piece de resistance. But now my headache...I've got to find a grid to protect the bottom from scratches. Honeymoon isn't over yet. And the bbq sauce, crazy me, I dropped the baster , it bounced on the oven door, did a big projective circle over my head. I'm lucky I didn't burn myself - sheesh!
Heidi - thanks for the tips - when you're back you are SO over here for coffee/wine/chat/whatever! I should check with Wendy - though she also loves the table.

First off, you're kitchen looks great! So nice, new, refreshed! As for the table, I totally agree with what Cherry said. Old mixed with new is a concept that can work. However, the table really does stick out because it's a warm wooden old fashioned look in a sea of modern, clean whites, blacks and steel. Definitely keep it for all of it's antique and sentimental value. Refinishing it and accessoring it with new/old chairs are an idea. I do cringe a bit on those design shows when the designer takes hold of a sentimental antique/family heirloom and sands the heck out of it and alters it's look completely, but if you and Ian are able to let go of emotions, changing the table might work to suit your kitchen's style. Or save yourself the work and hassle and buy something new...Sentimentality vs. practicality.

Hey bec, you've got to bring yourself and the kiddies over for play soon (we'll talk). Yeah, we don't know whether the new/old thing will work with this table, but we love it and would definitely save it. Maybe for a new office when we reno the basement for playroom and man cave!

Beee-UUUuuutiful kitchen! Wow, I'm jealous! How can you ever think about leaving a home like that now?

If you're feeling adventurous with the backsplash - let your kids and hubby all choose one tile each in the family of colour that you like (like aqua or green), and blend them with matching colour glass tiles... that way you're accenting on your families' individual choices (a little mosaic) - it'll be a real family place.

I know it sounds like a bit of a headache... but if the colours are chosen right (and I have complete faith in you to make the right interior design decisions) - it'll be completely unique, and gorgeous.

Hi,
I've no idea how I stumbled upon your blog, but I just had to let you know how amazing your kitchen is. It looks like a magazine. Lucky you!
Love the farm table, hope you kept it, I think people are paying a lot of money for those kind of tables these days.
I'm also a big fan of subway tiles, but I love the glass tiles too. Hope you post some pictures of that when it's done.

Hi Lisa-thanks for your comments! We're definitely keeping the table, just trying to figure out how to make it work in the kitchen. We did buy the light fixture so that's one less thing!
